Terex Pegson & Powerscreen the right fit for Kay and Kay Contracting, Kentucky

When Kay and Kay Contracting decided to develop a new site for a limestone quarry in January 2008, Bill Robinson, owner of Kay and Kay in London, Kentucky turned Powerscreen Crushing & Screening, the Terex Pegson and Powerscreen distributor for Kentucky for their mobile crushing and screening authority.

Paul McCaffrey of Powerscreen Crushing & Screening recommended the Terex ® Pegson XR400 jaw crusher, Powerscreen ® H6203 horizontal screen, Terex® Pegson 1300 Maxtrak cone crusher and two Powerscreen ® Chieftain 2100X incline screens to allow Kay and Kay to achieve its operational objectives and still not go over budget. Paul’s experience in the industry and machine service background in Ireland means he was recommending the right machines for the job.

A major advantage of the Powerscreen and Terex Pegson machines, Bill Robinson explains, is that he can also utilize them in his contracting and road-building businesses and is not limited to a static or stationary system. “I am able to bring the machines to sites for my demolition crushing needs and then on to my highway projects as well” comments Bill. “With the fuel-costs these days, we need to be able to minimize our transport costs. With Powerscreen and Terex Pegson machines, we are able to cut out much of our excess transportation.”

Kay and Kay, roadbuilding and commercial contractors were looking to produce .25” minus man-sand, 1” x .5” or #57, .5” x .25 “ or #8 and a 1mm minus agg-lime as their core products for their asphalt and concrete business.

After reviewing the Kay and Kay quarry site in London, Kentucky and measuring the limestone’s high silica density, Paul suggested a crushing & screening circuit comprising the Terex® Pegson XR400 26”x44” tracked jaw crusher, Powerscreen® H6203 20’x5’ three deck, triple shaft horizontal screen, Terex® Pegson 1300 Maxtrak 51” cone crusher and two Powerscreen® Chieftain 2100X 2-‘x5’ incline mobile screens for the limestone products Kay and Kay were looking to produce. With a current output of 3200 tons per day, Bill and his quarry manager Lee Killion are able to achieve 80% of their most profitable specification products and also achieve 20% of their output with a dense grade 2” minus for construction fill used on other projects.

The Terex® Pegson XR400 features a patented hydraulic-release system which protects toggle plates against tramp material as well as hydraulic-adjust for efficient jaw settings. The Powerscreen® H6203 features as triple-shaft 20’x6’ horizontal screen-box for higher amplitudes able to produce 600 tons per hour, the Terex® Pegson 1300 Cone features the Automax All-in-Feed design which allows for improved stone cubicity and the Powerscreen® Chieftain 2100X features a 20’x5’ triple-deck screen with oil-bath bearings and an adjustable screen-amplitude for improved stratification in finer applications.

Another factor in Kay and Kay’s decision was Powerscreen Crushing & Screening’s history and reputation in the market place and their ability to service the machines if anything goes wrong. “We need someone local that knows the machines and stocks parts and not just another trunk-slammer out here”, says Bill. His good standing and trusting relationship with Paul Mc Caffrey and Powerscreen Crushing & Screening is essential for his operations’ up-time and profitability.
