As many engineering graduates continue to leave NI in search of career-enhancing jobs, Terex decided to invest in our local talented students. Northern Ireland is the home of global leaders in mobile crushing & screening engineering, Powerscreen International & Terex-Finlay and Terex, their parent company believe we shouldn't be letting our talent go - especially in these new prosperous times.

The project set for the students was designed by Mark Allen, Terex Senior Engineer and involved redesigning the Terex overband magnet.  This unit is used to remove steel from construction & demolition waste when it is being processed for recycling.

Simply put, the Terex crushing & screening machines crush, screen, and sort materials  (aggregates, sand, gravel, stone, coal, waste) into specific sizes so they can be used, reused and sold for further use in global construction and infrastructure projects.

The competition involved researching new and alternative materials to improve the efficiency, cost and appearance of the magnet.  This competition involved a full business plan for the magnet including finance, sales and marketing in addition to the actual mechanical design.

Unusually for students this was a real time project with Terex hoping to use the winning designs in future development.  What really made the winners stand out were innovative designs and a commercially viable project.

Terex’s Mark Allen, who assessed the projects, commented,

“ The level of talent shown, quality of work and effort put into the project submissions has been extremely high.  I was really impressed by the innovation shown by these students. Whilst still at an academic level, many demonstrated true industrious talent.”

Terex decided to become involved with the University of Ulster as Northern Ireland is the hub of Crushing and Screening design and wants to support new talent as it emerges.

Terex Corporation is a diversified global manufacture of equipment for the construction, infrastructure, quarrying, recycling, mining, utility and maintenance industries.  2006 net sales were more than $7.6 billion.  Terex products are manufactured in 50 facilities in North & South America, Europe, Asia and Australia and are marketed in more than 170 countries.

Amanda Braden, Human Resources Director said,

“It is important that employees have the skills and knowledge to drive our business forward.  We need motivated, creative, individuals with ambitious goals for the future and the drive to make these goals a reality.”
