Powershredder 2400 - success in Floida

The recently launched Powershredder 2400 made an impressive debut in Florida during a recent demonstration to test the suitability of a slow-speed shredder in a primary shredding role, by Powerscreen’s local distributor to one of their customers - a large grinding firm based in Fort Myers.

The task was to process and reduce extremely tough building waste material, which consisted of hard woodwaste contaminated with scrap metal, concrete, and unspecified fines.

The customer had used high speed grinders for all applications of this kind in the past and it was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and operate this type of processor, because of the excessive wear, damage to the wearparts and continual downtime associated with raw materials of this sort being put through a high-speed machine. Powerscreen suggested that using one of their new Powershredder 2400 plants as the primary shredder could overcome these expensive and time-wasting problems. Another incentive to try out a slow speed shredder was the potential cost-saving in reduction of fuel consumption. The demonstration proved that the Powershredder 2400 was more than capable of performing the shredding task while returning a reduction in hourly fuel consumption by around 75% when compared with the current plant. In terms of cash saved alone, this works out to approximately US$100 in fuel savings.Additionally, the 30RPM slow-speed performance of the Powershredder 2400 has the added benefit of a significantly improved end-product, a lot less wear and tear on the cutters and shafts and far less cost and downtime for damaged wearparts replacement.

During the demonstration, the Powershredder 2400 produced in the region of 140 cubic metres per hour of finished product to roughly -457mm. Under demonstration conditions, the end product was a bit larger than desired, but this versatile machine features a quick-change system for different shaft and blade configurations, which can achieve a much smaller (or larger) product size, depending on the customer’s specific requirements.

The Powershredder 2400 is an ideal mobile unit for the efficient and high volume reduction of household, industrial, building and green waste, timber, plastics and logging/sawmill waste. The Powershredder 2400 can process up to 105 tonnes per hour of old timber and municipal solid waste and, for bulkier refuse and industrial solid waste, the throughput can average as much as 55 tonnes per hour.

The Powershredder 2400 produces a consistent and uniform material sizing with a range of tools to match the varied shaft configurations available for optimum materials processing. Operationally, the machine has a low dust and noise emission levels and has a small “footprint” for its high throughput – and the crawler undercarriage makes it highly mobile and agile on site. Automatic and fixed reverse shafts produce optimum processing of the widest possible range of materials. A generously proportioned low feed-in tipping hopper (6.35m³ capacity) allows the shredder to be fed by conveyor, excavator and grab or loading shovel. The hydraulically folding 1400mm wide discharge conveyor, with chevron belting, has a discharge height of 4 metres for good stockpiling capacity, loading into tipper trucks or by direct feed into a secondary separating processor such as a trommel or high-speed grinder for further rendering and separation. The conveyor is also hydraulically angle adjustable between 15º and 34º.  The Powershredder 2400 is equipped with remote control for safe distance operation. Optional extras include hopper extensions and a breaker bar can be installed below the shafts for further size reduction of waste materials.

The demonstration incontrovertibly proved the benefits of a primary reduction of contaminated woodwaste before a final grind if desired:- Less wear than high speed grinders – the Powershredder 2400 runs at around 30RPM while high speed grinders and shredders can run anywhere from 900-2000RPM. 25% of the hourly fuel consumption of high speed grinders. Prepares material for secondary processing if required. Reduced tipping fees at landfill or transfer stations through volume reduction, which also lowers transportation costs.
